About The Farm

This coffee is processed at the Umoco washing station near Kayanza, where producers deliver handpicked cherries on foot, bicycle, or motorcycle. Farms are small and diversified, with coffee grown alongside subsistence crops like bananas, maize, cassava, and beans. Processing involves a double fermentation—12 hours in water followed by 12 hours in cement tanks—before drying for 20–25 days on raised African beds. At elevations of 1,800–2,200 meters near the edge of Kibira National Park, the region’s red clay soils, cool climate, and high rainfall contribute to its vibrant, structured cup profiles.

Burundi is a small, landlocked country in East Africa bordered by Tanzania, Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Lake Tanganyika. Coffee is a critical part of the rural economy, supporting millions of smallholder farmers who rely on it as a primary cash crop. Accessing the coffee-growing region of Kayanza requires travel from the capital, Bujumbura, through steep, remote roads into the highlands where the Remera community is located.
