This coffee is a compelling and intricately layered brew, evoking the delightful flavors of a festive fruitcake, the subtle warmth of whisky, and the enticing notes of figs and oranges. Its full-bodied richness is complemented by a sweet, fruity acidity that lingers on the palate.

Named 'Rosas' as part of Café Granja La Esperanza's annual auction, this lot of Mandela showcases the farm's finest flavors. The Hybrid washed process is as straightforward as it sounds: whole cherries undergo initial fermentation, followed by waterless depulping, a second fermentation stage, and finally, a full wash and mechanical drying.

What makes this coffee truly unique is its origin story. Developed by CGLE through a meticulous five-stage process, it started with self-pollination to ensure genetic purity, involving Caturra x Caturra. Further enhancements included crossing with Timor Hybrid to bolster resistance to coffee rust, and infusion with Ethiopian influences like Sudan Rume, Daleco, and Villa Sarchi.

    About the Farm

    • La Esperanza is owned by siblings Rigoberto and Luis Eduardo Herrera, who are third-generation coffee producers with a rich family history in coffee production. Their coffee journey traces back to their grandparents, who initiated their coffee careers in 1945 at the Potosi farm. Juan Antonio Herrera and his wife Blanca Ligia Correa purchased the land, which already featured Typica plants, and later introduced three additional cultivars: Red Bourbon, Yellow Bourbon, and Caturra. This marked the beginning of Cafe Granja La Esperanza.
    • In the late '90s, Rigoberto and Luis assumed the family operation and embarked on the demanding task of transitioning the farms to organic coffee production. In addition to their existing land, they acquired what is now Finca La Esperanza and expanded their organic coffee production.
    • Over the past three decades of their stewardship, Rigoberto and Luis have undertaken significant farm renovations, including the introduction of new and exotic coffee varieties across the 52 productive hectares of the Potosi Farm. At Las Margaritas, they cultivate classic Colombian varieties such as Caturra, Colombia, and Tabi, alongside exotic varieties like Geisha, Sidra, San Juan, Mandela, SL28, and more.
    • Beyond their exemplary farming practices, they are trailblazers in coffee processing, continuously exploring innovative techniques and processes to elevate the quality of their coffees.
    • The coffee lot in question features a unique variety developed at La Esperanza called Mandela. This variety results from a cross between Caturra and Caturra, with subsequent hybridization involving Timor, Ethiopian materials like Sudan Rume, Daleco, and Villa Sarchi.
