    Biotrē Bags 2.0

Our 340g and 2lb coffee bags are made entirely of from plant materials and breakdown in a relatively short period of time.

     Biotrē 2.0 FAQ

    Are these bags completely compostable?
No, due to the inner lining made of sugar cane. However, this layer is made sustainably with 100% renewable material (meaning not made of fossil fuels, but instead bio-based and natural resources that can be replenished through a natural process).

That’s not all. About 60% of the bag components break down under standard composting conditions, so they can be partially composted in your back yard compost. Go earth!

Can I put this in the city compost?

You should not put these bags in the Calgary city compost, due to rudimentary composting facilities. However, you can compost the outer lining in a healthy home compost which will break down within 12 weeks. Dispose of the sugar cane layer in the garbage afterward.

What if I don't have access to a backyard compost?
Please dispose of the bags in the garbage. It may feel wasteful, however, these bags will break down at least 10 times faster in a landfill vs other coffee bags because of the plant-based materials they're made with.

How are these bags better for the environment?
The plant-based components that go into Biotre® 2.0 absorb the greenhouse gas CO2 through natural plant respiration prior to being used. Manufacturing these bags produces a significantly smaller carbon footprint (as much as 60% less from the typical coffee bags). They break down much faster in the landfill as well. We're talking 5-10 years vs 100 years, which is the time it takes for most other coffee bags to break down!

Our 340g and 2lb bags are made with Biotrē 2.0 materials, which are 60% compostable and 100% renewable, including the valve!

Additional FAQ on our new bags

What’s the difference between the red bag and the black bag?
The red bag contains the coffees with an acidity rating from 3-5. The black bag contains coffees with an acidity rating of 2 or lower.
In summary: coffees that are a little more adventurous—red; comfortable and more classic coffees—black.

How does the Sweetness, Acidity, and Body Scale work?

This is an internal scale from 0-5 comparing our own coffees. Each coffee is cupped and the sweetness, acidity, and body are rated. Keep in mind that different brewing methods may affect results.

    About the Farm

    Fazenda Um

    • Coming from completely non-traditional coffee farmers, Fazenda Um began in an abandoned farm in South of Minas Gerais in 2009. Stefano Um, son of South Korean Immigrants in Brazil, was never involved with producing coffee in his life until he began thinking about retirement. Stefano lived and grew up in the country side in Korea before moving to Brazil at the age of 12, which always brought wonderful memories of his childhood in a rice field in South Korea. With a deep desire to live in the countryside, Fazenda Um, began unpretentiously as a retirement plan. However, once Stefano began producing coffee with deep passion for high quality, and traceability when exporting his lots to his first Asian clients, he saw the unlockable potential of high quality Brazilian coffee.

    Tega & Tula

    • Tega & Tula Specialty Coffee Farm is named after the nearby villages of Tega and Tula. The farm is known for producing high-quality coffee with a distinct Sidamo flavor profile that is highly valued in the specialty coffee market. The coffee is processed as Q/specialty 1, which is the highest quality grade for coffee and indicates that it has been carefully grown, harvested, and processed to achieve its exceptional taste. The coffee's unique flavor is a result of the region's specific climate, soil, and altitude, as well as the careful cultivation and processing techniques employed by Tega & Tula Specialty Coffee Farm.
    • The washing station is located in the Kogne mountain area of West Arsi, which is known for its lush forests and beautiful scenery. The Hodum river and smaller rivers Bedesa and Belecho provide ample water for coffee cultivation, which is an essential ingredient for producing high-quality coffee.
    • Tega and Tula, the operators of the washing station, are committed to paying premium prices to the farmers and workers who provide their coffee beans. They are also recognized as model farmers for their investment in community development, including building schools, constructing roads, and supporting women's clinics.
    • The washing station also supports its outgrowers by providing them with disease-resistant coffee varieties and seedlings, as well as farm equipment. In addition, Tega & Tula invests heavily in sustainable and climate-smart farming trainings to help their outgrowers improve their farming practices and produce high-quality coffee while protecting the environment.
    • Overall, West Arsi washing station coffee is not only known for its exceptional taste, but also for its commitment to social and environmental responsibility.

    Only coffee I’ll buy!

    Great coffee for sensitive stomachs.

I'm a coffee fiend, but I have developed stomach issues over the last few years so I had to cut my consumption to virtually zero. I found this coffee on sale in Vancouver and I knew Rosso from visits to Calgary, so I grabbed a bag for my wife. I decided to treat myself to a cup and the inevitable consequences that would follow, but found that I was fine. I have now drunk it 3 days in a row with no consequences. When they say low acidity, they are not kidding! This is a lifesaver for me. Thanks Rosso - do NOT stop making this one.

I bought a bag to try out with my new coffee maker. So far, I'm enjoying it!

    Daily Go To

Every since moving to Calgary I have been drinking this coffee almost everyday before work. I found it at the CO-OP in a 2lb bag, it was inexpensive compared to other local roasters and quite good. Its a daily filter coffee for my wife and I, also it worked very well as a traditional espresso if that's what you're looking for. A very safe and welcoming coffee when you don't want to be drinking "funky" coffees everyday.
