    Biotrē Bags 2.0

Our 340g and 2lb coffee bags are made entirely of from plant materials and breakdown in a relatively short period of time.

     Biotrē 2.0 FAQ

    Are these bags completely compostable?
No, due to the inner lining made of sugar cane. However, this layer is made sustainably with 100% renewable material (meaning not made of fossil fuels, but instead bio-based and natural resources that can be replenished through a natural process).

That’s not all. About 60% of the bag components break down under standard composting conditions, so they can be partially composted in your back yard compost. Go earth!

Can I put this in the city compost?

You should not put these bags in the Calgary city compost, due to rudimentary composting facilities. However, you can compost the outer lining in a healthy home compost which will break down within 12 weeks. Dispose of the sugar cane layer in the garbage afterward.

What if I don't have access to a backyard compost?
Please dispose of the bags in the garbage. It may feel wasteful, however, these bags will break down at least 10 times faster in a landfill vs other coffee bags because of the plant-based materials they're made with.

How are these bags better for the environment?
The plant-based components that go into Biotre® 2.0 absorb the greenhouse gas CO2 through natural plant respiration prior to being used. Manufacturing these bags produces a significantly smaller carbon footprint (as much as 60% less from the typical coffee bags). They break down much faster in the landfill as well. We're talking 5-10 years vs 100 years, which is the time it takes for most other coffee bags to break down!

Our 340g and 2lb bags are made with Biotrē 2.0 materials, which are 60% compostable and 100% renewable, including the valve!

Additional FAQ on our new bags

What’s the difference between the red bag and the black bag?
The red bag contains the coffees with an acidity rating from 3-5. The black bag contains coffees with an acidity rating of 2 or lower.
In summary: coffees that are a little more adventurous—red; comfortable and more classic coffees—black.

How does the Sweetness, Acidity, and Body Scale work?

This is an internal scale from 0-5 comparing our own coffees. Each coffee is cupped and the sweetness, acidity, and body are rated. Keep in mind that different brewing methods may affect results.

Why isn’t my phone reading the QR code?

If you’re using an iPhone, you may need to use your QR Code Scanner instead of your camera app. The QR Code Scanner is located in the Control Centre.

    About the Farm

    Finca Santa Ines

    • Finca Santa Inés de Medina was originally part of farm El Potrero, property of the Herrera family. It is located in Antigua, Guatemala, 15 minutes away from Antigua’s central park. Margarita Herrera, daughter of Carlos Herrera the original owner, inherited the farm to her son Raul Minondo who ran the farm until he passed away in 2010. Raul Minondo Ayau, took over the farm after his fathers passing, though they’ve been working together for years.
    • As an agricultural engineer, Raul Minondo Ayau, was eager to continue the legacy. Since it’s beginning, Santa Ines has always strived to maintain traditional varieties and practices that have long characterized and made Antigua Coffee, world famous. Raul has always been passionate of friendly farming and optimization of resources. Thus, he has converted Santa Ines into a coffee garden. Utilizing avocado trees for shade, black beans for intercropping and nitrogen fixation in the ground, and even trying out new production techniques, Santa Ines is a coffee haven.

    Bumbogo

    • Emmanuel Rusatira, one of the partners and founders of Bumbogo, was able to demonstrate how the mills purpose was to stimulate this local economy and was successful in doing so after the first operating season in 2017. This mill is situated for large volumes and just like other mills MTCo is operating, they're paying a premium per pound of cherry to the farmers they're working with.
    • After a challenging 2020 season, 523 farmers were on record, selling their coffee to Bumbogo and collectively about 300 tonnes of cherry was purchased for processing. To handle this volume, 105 workers were hired in peak season. This showcases the significant economic impact Bumbogo has in it's region.
    • The majority of the workers at Bumbogo are women, and this mill, as well as others that Muraho Trading Co operates are trying to empower the female workforce in Rwanda!
    • There is a wide variety of processing techniques now being practiced at Bumbogo. For the majority of their volume, they utilize a Pinhal Maquina coffee depulper to seperate the cherry from the seeds, they're both then macerated using a stomp-down-song-and-dance process called 'Ikinimba' and co-fermented in a ceramic, open-air tank for approximately 12 hours, beginning in the evening as the temperature cools considerably. In the morning, the coffee is washed with clean flowing water in a serpentine channel, once again separating the cherry from the seeds, while more importantly, sorting the seeds by density.

    Day tripper

Not as bright and juicy as I was expecting based on the description. You really have to grind this more fine than I would expect for a pour over to get anything resembling ‘juicy’ or ‘acidic’. This was more of a medium roast than I expected. Good coffee, but I would not personally describe it the same as Rosso has

    Great light coffee

As usual, Rosso delivers with quality coffee. I had my coffee delivered the same day it was roasted. The notes of this coffee are not as sweet and fruity as I had hoped, but it's still a good coffee
