Why change the name?
It's recently been brought to our attention that the term 'Tipping Point' has alternate meanings that we were not aware of upon developing this brand nearly seven years ago. When we originally named our Tipping Point coffee, the name was inspired by Canadian author, Malcolm Gladwell and his debut book, The Tipping Point: "How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference" as well as the roasting terminology to where the temperature begins to increase after the beans are dropped into the roaster.

Today, you're the first to hear that we are in the process of rebranding this staple coffee to 'Turning Point', which means the same in the roasting world. Although the name is changing, the coffee will have the same great components and flavour notes. This will happen in stages, first with our bags and then our jars. We're making this change to ensure our audience knows that we are listening, that we are learning, that their feedback matters, and ultimately, "How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference."

Chocolatey, nutty, and smooth. This coffee sees a little more development in the roaster to minimize the acidity, it hones in on the body to act like a warm hug. Currently, 25% of Turning Point comes from ASOTBILBAO and is a classic washed Colombian and 75% Santa Lucia natural Yellow Catuai from Brazil.

Our current offering for Turning Point is a blend of two coffees. We've profiled these two coffees separately and blended them post-roast. Our intention is to match density and bean sizing so they extract at even rates, bringing you the most flavour clarity in your cup of coffee.

At the Farm, ASOTBILBAO

ASOTBILBAO is a cooperative association of 44 members. Annually they receive workshops and training to help them improve the management of resources, and how important it is to keep track of data so they can better plan for the future.

The members' farms are medium-sized, with 4.5 hectares being the average. All of them within the municipality Planadas. With high elevations of 1600 meters and above, these areas are ideal for coffee production, especially high-quality Colombia and Castillo.

On its own, this washed processed coffee is sweet, like warmed honey or a brown sugar simple syrup. It's nicely balanced, with a medium acidity backing up that sweetness and giving structure. With a little more roast development to match Tipping Points' profile, this coffee contributes warm chocolate qualities and a smooth overall composure to the blend.

At the Farm, Santa Lucia

Helcio has been working with coffee since he was 15 years old. In 1976, Helcio married Glycia Pereira Carneiro, and began to manage the farm Santa Lucia. at that time, there was no concern about the quality of coffee, the focus was simply on volume. They had no access to knowledge, technology, or even information about markets for Specialty coffees.

In the 90’s, Helcio was part of the movement that started searching for quality in the region of Carmo de Minas, being one of the founders of Aprocam – Association of Coffee Producers from the Mantiqueira Region.

This group of pioneers sought the help of experts and scientists to know the actual quality of coffees and how to produce quality in large scale. These experts shared with the group about the Pulped Natural Processing Method and how it would be helpful on their wish. Helcio was one of the first growers to get the facilities needed for this method, being a pioneer in the region.

Year after year, with the support of universities and scientists, as well as trips to other coffee producing countries, Helcio has continued getting better in the production of specialty coffees. We've cupped coffees from Santa Lucia since 2017. Nowadays his name, and his farm also, are already known in key markets.

"Our main challenge is in manpower, there will be a change in the characteristic of our coffee region due to this factor. And we need to be prepared for this moment"
